Martha Stewart's Molasses Cookies
I adore making these around Thanksgiving and Christmas! The smell fills the house…the cloves, ginger, and molasses bring on the holiday cheer.
1 1/2 C. flour
1 C. sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 C. shortening, melted then cooled
1 large egg, beaten slightly
1/4 C. molasses
3/4 C. rolled oats
Preheat oven to 375. Combine the First 6 ingredients and mix. Add the next 3; mix. Add oats; mix. Use cookie or ice-cream scoop to scoop about 8 cookies per ungreased cookie sheet. Put some granulated sugar in a bowl. Press the bottom of a glass onto a cookie to get it sticky, then dip the bottom of the glass into the sugar -then press down a cookie (doing to all cookies in turn). Bake for approximately 12 minutes. Remove to rack to cool.
