I wondered about some of these things when I went to purchase oils for the first time. My husband & I have a medical background, so I researched a ton before purchasing. The answers I found might help you too.

One of the reasons I shied away from oils to begin with was because I’d had friends try them & say it did nothing for them. Maybe you’ve tried essential oils before … maybe lavender for sleep or peppermint for headaches & it didn’t help.
