Summer Safety

The summer months are the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors with your family + friends. We know that many of you will be hitting the pool, enjoying family barbeques, or spending time in the mountains or at the beach. We want to ensure that you & your family stay safe this summer, & are also able to use your essential oils in the most effective ways possible.

General Oil Safety:

  1. Always check the label. Each essential oil has specific directions for use. Look at the labels & follow directions closely, especially if you are trying oils for the first time. Many oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil. For application convenience, many of doTERRA’s most popular oils are pre-diluted with a carrier oil as part of our Touch line. The Peppermint touch roller is a summer favorite for many because of its cooling effects on the skin. When applying to your face, avoid contact with your eyes, nose, or ears.

  2. Store oils safely. With school out, young children have more time at home. They often are bored & spend their time exploring the home. Keep your oils in a safe place out of the reach of children. Remind your young children that essential oils should be used with a parent. A great way to include your children is to let them pick the oil you’re going to diffuse. The uplifting or calming scents that fill your home can contribute to keeping a positive atmosphere & can help dispel hard feelings after an argument.

Outdoor Essential Oil Safety
The sun is inviting & it’s often a boost to go outside & get that natural vitamin D. However, be aware that some of your family’s favorite citrus oils should be avoided topically before direct sunlight or exposure to artificial UV rays.

When sunlight comes in contact with certain substances it can initiate something called photosensitization. This can result in something that looks much like a sunburn. More extreme exposure may cause hives or burns. Citrus essential oils are known for this. With these oils, if you’re going to be out in the sun for any length of time, just be sure to apply them under the clothing or at the end of the day when you’re done being in the sun. Keep reading to find out which oils and blends to be aware of.

HIKING + CAMPING

Essentials to have on a hike:

Think about your needs on a hike. Energy, insect repellant, seasonal threats, maybe even cooling - these are all issues essential oils can be used to address. Peppermint is a must; just put a few drops in your palms & inhale whenever you’re in need of a quick energy boost. You can make a cooking compress in a pinch with a towel & some water. You should never head out to enjoy nature without your Terrashield Outdoor Blend. Apply it ot your legs, arms & neck at the start of the hike & reapply as needed for an effective barrier. Lastly, you should have a bottle of Lavender in every bag you carry, regardless of where you’re going. Apply it topically to minor skin irritations & once you reach the summit of the hike, pop the cap & inhale to relax & enjoy the view.

  • Apply to legs, arms, & neck before going outdoors

  • Take on camping trips or to outdoor events

  • Toss a bottle in the kid’s summer camp bag

Quick cool down tip:

Several essential oils, especially Peppermint, Eucalyptus, & Basil; are known to be cooking to the skin & there are many ways to take advantage of this properly. My favorite way to quickly cool the skin down is by making a cold water compress. Add 1-2 cups of cool water to a bowl, 5-10 drops of Peppermint, Eucalyptus, or Basil, & a few ice cubes. Swish the solution around with a soft cloth, wring the cloth out, & apply it to the head or neck.

GARDENING:

Container Gardening with Essential Oils:

The idea of beginning a garden is often appealing at this time of year. Who doesn’t love homegrown fresh herbs + veggies? However, the reality is that a garden is often time-consuming & can seem to need a lot of space. That’s why container gardens can be a useful option when you’re trying to grow your own veggies. Below you’ll find some ideas for making the container garden work for you, including tips for using essential oils.

  1. Try growing herbs in a sunny spot in your home. This is excellent for those that live in apartments where space is at a minimum. Keep in mind when you’re looking for a good spot indoors that many herbs love as much natural light as possible. Find a south or southwest facing window for the best results. Use pots that have good drainage, (e.g. they have drainage holes at the bottom & quality potting soil.) Herbs that do well indoors include thyme, rosemary, sage, oregano, & marjoram.

Oil tip: If you’re growing herbs inside, we recommend using Peppermint in a spray bottle to keep away any bugs (yes, they appear even indoors) that may attack your plants. The additional benefit of growing herbs if you have pets is that most cats & dogs dislike the smell of herbs, & will leave them alone.

  2. If you want to try growing vegetables, utilize a large pot or window box. Plants that like pots include peppers of all types, cucumbers, zucchini, & tomatoes. However, you can also try any other veggies—don’t be afraid to experiment. Keep the pot on a porch or an apartment balcony in a sunny spot. Don’t forget that you’ll need to water a little more frequently to ensure that your plant doesn’t dry out completely, but overall you should need less water.

Oil Tip: Because this is outside, you’ll need to worry a little more about animals like dogs or cats that could be attracted to your pot. To remedy this, spray plants with Rosemary to keep animals out. If you’re using your balcony, you can also use Cedarwood to keep the pests away.

  3. Skip the typical chemicals used in fertilizers that you wouldn’t want indoors. Fortunately, you won’t need to worry about weeds with your potted or indoor garden (though vinegar mixed with hot water works well as a weed killer). However, fertilizer is still a must. You can meet this need by composting your organic waste like veggie peelings & egg shells to add to the soil.

Oil Tip: Find out what the “companion plant” is for your vegetables, & use that essential oil instead of the actual plant if you don’t have space to plant more. For example, tomatoes & basil work well together to create vigor for growth + plant resistance. So, water the tomato plant with Basil essential oil in the water for similar results.

Growing your own food can be a wonderful experience, & it doesn’t have to be left to those that have ample space. Using these tricks you can grow a healthy + vibrant herb or veggie garden right in the space you have available.
