6 Essential Oils for Supporting Anxious Feelings

We live in a world where everyone wants everything right NOW. When I talk to my friends & family, it's obvious that our commitments are important to us - your kids, your job, your husband, extended family, service opportunities we want to help with…we tend to work hard without giving ourselves enough of a break.

We lose out on opportunities to connect with the people that are important to us when we're feeling overwhelmed.

Does this sound familiar? “I don't have time to rest. This just needs to get done.” Sometimes we even tend to wear our busy-ness as a badge representing how successful we are.

But we can't create more hours in the day.

And work & family responsibilities are always going to be there.

Here are some signs of everyday stress:

  • headache

  • trouble sleeping

  • lack of energy

  • decreased productivity

How can you get some relief? Here are a few things known to help:

  • exercise like Yoga or time working out at the gym

  • meditation

  • eating right

  • hobbies

  • vacation

Stress management is all about being more intentional & proactive about our thoughts, emotions, & dealing with problems.

I know, I know. It's easier said than done.

So since we can’t completely eliminate stressors, I want to share some key essential oils that are super helpful in helping you stay calm & to support feelings of anxiousness.

Top Essential Oils for Supporting Anxious Feelings

Lavender:

A lot of dentists these days are diffusing Lavender in their offices because of the proven benefits of Lavender in helping people to relax. In multiple studies, lavender oil lowered anxiety in people who watched anxiety-provoking films, were undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery & visiting the dentist.

  • Try diffusing a few drops in your diffuser, or putting a drop in your hands then cupping over your nose + mouth & inhaling deeply for 30 seconds.

Vetiver:

This is great for sleep, but also for just calming down. When experiencing anxious, unnerved, or stressed feelings, use Vetiver oil aromatically or topically. Vetiver oil is rich in sesquiterpenes, which contain grounding properties. When used on the skin or inhaled, Vetiver oil can help provide a calming & grounding effect on emotions.

Because of Vetiver oil’s grounding effects, it's often used for massages.

  • Give your body a little TLC with a Vetiver oil bath. Fill your tub with warm water & add 2 drops of Vetiver to a cup of Epsom salts, then add to the water. These simple steps will provide you with an ideal bath that is perfect for deep relaxation. The aromatic benefits of Vetiver oil will also aid in creating a soothing + calming atmosphere.

  • After a long day of standing, apply a few drops of Vetiver oil to your feet & slowly massage the oil in. I love to do this before crawling into bed for the night. A Vetiver oil massage is perfect after a long day, and the aromatic features of the oil can also provide a grounding & calming effect on emotions to help prepare you for a restful night's sleep.

Copaiba:

Copaiba oil has a plethora of benefits when taken internally. The main constituent of Copaiba oil is Beta-caryophyllene, which is also present in Black Pepper essential oil and helps soothe anxious feelings. Beta-caryophyllene is an amazing compound with health benefits that have been widely researched. You can read more about Copaiba here & here.

Powerfully relaxing, Copaiba oil comes from a fragrant tropical tree native to South America. It can help soothe anxious feelings & supports the cardiovascular, nervous, digestive, immune, & respiratory systems.

Copaiba is the essential oil with the highest known concentration of beta-caryophyllene.

  • I actually put 1-2 drops under the tongue & swallow some water with it as a supplement every morning, since this oil is helpful to so many body systems (I do this with Frankincense too)

  • Try adding 1-2 drops of Copaiba oil to water, juice, or tea to support the health of the cardiovascular, immune, digestive, nervous, & respiratory system

  • This is an awesome oil to turn to at the end of a stressful day

Bergamot:

This oil is commonly found in Earl Grey tea & has a floral taste + aroma. It's very calming & is an ideal oil to use to help when feeling sad, anxious or when tension is high.

Bergamot is unique in that it has high concentrations of the uplifting monoterpene limonene like other citrus, but also contains the calming monoterpene ester linalyl acetate (which gives the relaxing qualities to oils like Lavender, Clary Sage, & Petitgrain).

Many people love also using it to support better sleep, because it supports relaxation + reduces agitation.

  • Put 3 drops of Bergamot in a diffuser to reduce feelings of negativity, or to encourage self-confidence

  • When stress levels are high, diffuse Bergamot oil with Grapefruit & Douglas Fir

  • Apply Bergamot oil to the bottom of your feet before bedtime to encourage a sense of calm & harmony

  • Swirl a drop into a mug of hot water to create your own Earl Grey tea, with all the emotional benefits Bergamot has to offer!

Adaptiv blend:

This blend is exactly what you want for stressful moments. It's very targeted & a fan favorite with good reason.

Use it when you have a big meeting coming up, or any other important events that are stressing you out. Just put a drop in your palm, rub palms together, cup over your nose & mouth, then breathe deeply for at least 30 seconds. Rub the extra on your neck/chest so you can keep smelling it. The nose brain connection is huge & will really help with those feelings of stress.

This blend helps with improving focus & attention, while relaxing the body + mind.

Studies show the scent of Lavender, a main ingredient of Adaptiv, contributes to performing tasks requiring sustained attention. Lavender, Magnolia, Neroli, & Sweetgum (all components of this blend) provide stress-relieving effects while Wild Orange & Spearmint energize + uplift. Copaiba & Rosemary soothe anxious feelings to round out the calming blend.

Whether you’re feeling fatigued or restless, indecisive or irritable, Adaptiv Calming Blend is part of the toolbox to help the body & mind to stay balanced. Use Adaptiv Calming Blend in combination with the Adaptiv capsules for synergistic results.

  • Mix 3-4 drops with Epsom salts and add to bath water for a relaxing soak.

  • Combine 3 drops with Fractionated Coconut Oil for soothing massage

  • Diffuse to promote a centered & calm mindset

Frankincense:

This precious oil is great for supporting feelings of anxiousness & sadness due to its calming & grounding quality.

The perfume or aroma that it emits promotes feelings of satisfaction, peace, relaxation, & overall wellness, which explains its unique value in ancient times.

In meditation it helps to quiet the mind. This quality is also what makes it helpful when dealing with anxious feelings. Mix with Bergamot & Lavender to deepen the effect.

  • Diffuse 3 drops to promote feelings of relaxation & to balance mood. Frankincense oil blends well with citrus oils like Lime, Lemon, and Wild Orange, and other oils such as Cypress, Lavender, Geranium, Rose, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, & Clary Sage.

  • Add Frankincense’s incredible aroma to any room in your house by making this DIY Essential Oil Room Spray. Start by getting an empty glass spray bottle & putting in 15 drops of Frankincense oil, 15 drops of Grapefruit oil, and 30 drops of Douglas Fir oil. Top off the rest of the bottle with water. You now have the most amazing room spray! Just spritz this spray on carpet, furniture, or in the air of any room you desire. When using this homemade spray, you'll be able to experience its relaxing & peaceful benefits.

  • Apply 1-2 drops to the bottoms of your feet & massage in. The soothing sensation and aroma will promote feelings of relaxation and a balanced mood. This is a great habit to start every day with.
