Some of the Top Ways to Enjoy Peppermint Essential Oil!

Peppermint is one of the most popular essential oils, & can be used dozens of different ways. I use it almost daily + always carry it with me when I'm away from home.

My all time favorite yummy way to use Peppermint is to add 8 drops to any brownie recipe before baking…it makes them taste like Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies! 🍪

Peppermint oil blends well with Grapefruit, Tangerine, & Wild Orange essential oils. It's found in doTERRA's:

  • PastTense (Tension Blend)

  • MetaPWR (Metabolic Blend)

  • Deep Blue (Soothing Blend)

  • DigestZen (Digestive Blend)

  • AromaTouch (Massage Blend)

  • & Breathe (Respiratory Blend)

It really is a jack of all trades!

Peppermint oil acts as a natural anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antispasmodic, cooling, invigorating, expectorant, vasodilator, & stimulator.

Top 11 Ways to use Peppermint Essential Oil

Headache

Peppermint is a vasodilator. So if you need to relax the blood vessels in your head, due to a tension headache, this is your guy. Rub 1 drop of peppermint on the back of the neck, temples, or forehead.

Another nifty way I love to use this oil for head tension? Something called the “thumbprint method”. Just take 1 drop of Peppermint on your palm, swipe it up with the thumb of your opposite hand, then press to the roof of your mouth and hold it there for about 30 seconds. There are a lot of blood vessels that run through there. The oil gets absorbed very quickly into the bloodstream and helps to relax those blood vessels.

I tried this with my husband (who is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist) back when I was brand new to using essential oils. We were both excited by how great this worked for us!

Energy & Focus

Diffuse 3 drops of peppermint + 3 drops of wild orange.

Increase exercise performance

There have actually been a lot of studies done on how this works. Peppermint oil helps your red blood cells carry more oxygen to your body. Many athletes use this concept to help them when they compete.

One of my friends has a son who competed at a very high level as a swimmer. He used Peppermint essential oil to decrease his time. Pretty cool!

Before a workout, place 1 drop of peppermint on the tongue. Researchers found that 1 drop of peppermint taken internally before a workout increased exercise performance & respiratory function variables. How amazing is that?!

Upset stomach or indigestion

Rub 1 drop over the stomach, or place 1 drop on the tongue & then drink a glass of water.

One caveat to this use. If you have acid reflux, don't use Peppermint internally in this way. Only use it topically. Since Peppermint acts as a smooth muscle relaxant, it can relax the sphincter between your esophagus and your stomach when you swallow the Peppermint. This can allow your stomach acid to reflux into your esophagus. So instead, just rub it over your chest if you have an upset stomach or indigestion.

Nausea

Open the bottle & put it close to your nose & inhale + exhale deeply for about 30 seconds. I always bring peppermint when I'm flying because I just never know if any extra turbulence is going to unsettle my stomach. Works like a charm!

There are also portable car diffusers that are great for getting Peppermint essential oil circulating in your car if you have any kids that tend to get car sick.

If you don't have acid reflux, I also like to swallow one drop with a little water. It really helps to take my motion sickness away immediately.

To clear airways or for any respiratory issues

Rub 1 drop of peppermint over the sinuses or over the lungs. When rubbing peppermint on the face, be careful not to get too close to the eyes, as it will make your eyes water.

For a fever or cooling an overheated body

Rub 1-2 drops of peppermint up & down the spine. Even better, add a few drops to a small spray bottle of water and spray on the back.

For fresh breath (better for you than gum)

Place 1 drop of peppermint on the tongue. Chewing gum keeps your digestive system constantly active (not good). Use Peppermint to freshen your breath instead.

doTERRA actually makes little Peppermint Beadlets that are super portable and perfect for this. I always have them in my purse, and several of my kids like keeping them handy too.

Peppermint cookies, brownies, ice cream, or milkshakes

I'll use about 5 drops in cookie batter or ice cream, 1-2 drops in ice cream for a Peppermint milkshake, or 8 drops in brownie batter for a fun peppermint flavor! This makes brownies taste like Girls Scout Thin Mint cookies!

To protect the respiratory system against respiratory illness & seasonal allergies

Combine 20 drops peppermint, 20 drops lemon, 20 drops lavender, 20 drops breathe, 20 drops Tea Tree & 20 drops frankincense in a 10ml glass roller ball & top with fractionated coconut oil. Swipe the blend over the sinuses &/or feet 2x a day. I normally have terrible seasonal allergies, but haven't dealt with that for years now since discovering this blend!

To soothe achy joints or muscles

Fill the bath with warm water & 1 cup of epsom salts + 3 drops of peppermint. Soak for 20 minutes.
